United States Senator Chuck Grassley (R) of Iowa took the senate floor with a firm message to America: a cut in U.S. subsidies for ethanol production will lead to major job loss, create a tax hike on gasoline, support dictators like Hugo Chavez and perpetuate America's dependence on foreign oil.
Mr. Grassley, who had the floor for just under ten minutes, began and ended his speech directly addressing a group of U.S senators both democrats and republican who wrote a letter earlier this week to United States Senate leadership calling for an end to U.S. subsidies on ethanol. Pulling no punches Grassley pointed to the positives that "home-grown ethanol".
"It is important to remember" said Grassley, "that the incentive exists to help the producers of ethanol compete with the big oil industry, and remember the big oil industry has been well supported by the federal treasury for more than a whole century".
