Canadian batteries to help Indian telecom towers go solar

Indian telecom towers produce 5 megatons of CO2 annually.

The Toronto-based battery maker Electrovaya walked away with two deals after a business round-table set up between the Canadian and Indian governments.

The first is with Environ Energy Corporation India Pvt. Ltd., also known as Bhaskar Solar. The two companies will work together to provide renewable energy solutions for 15 thousand proposed telecom towers in India.

The majority of telecom towers in India are powered by diesel generators (even those that are on the grid use diesel as a means of coping with frequent power outages) and consume 2 billion liters of diesel fuel annually. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recently set targets for powering the towers with renewable sources, and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is supporting off-grid telecom applications with subsidies.

Electrovaya will also provide lithium batteries for the Indian electric bike manufacturer, Hero Eco.
