U.S. Trade Mission Promotes Adoption of Clean Energy in Indonesia

On a recent trade mission to Asia, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke advocated for the adoption of more renewable energy sources in Indonesia.

Locke said that although clean energy sources require more up-front investment, which is difficult for developing countries, Indonesia has key renewable resources which can be tapped.

It has been estimated that 40% of the world's geothermal resources lie within the geographic confines of Indonesia.  At the moment only 4% of that potential is being harvested.

Beyond geothermal, Locke further stated that solar, wind, and hydropower resources have a budding future in the Indonesia.  These technologies, Locke says, are ideal for a country composed of 17,000 islands because they are easily utilized as small-scale energy generators.

Locke finished his mission by saying it was time for Indonesia  to shift away from imported oil being its major energy source:  "Indonesia has the potential to be one of the biggest users and producers of renewable energy."
