Wipro Wants to Be a Leader in Green IT

Green information technology (IT) appears to be an industry that is about to explode.

Major Indian software company, Wipro (NYSE:WIT) joins a long list of IT companies who are developing products that will help businesses and home track and cut their energy use.

Wipro believes the green IT sector will blossom in the next 10 to 15 years--it sees green technologies having the same business potential as the IT sector did twenty years ago.  The software company wants to be a leader in this area, and it believes its blend of technologies and business solutions uniquely positions it to capture a large share of the Indian and global market.

Wipro has developed integrated software which can help reduce the carbon emissions of multiple industries.  For example, Wipro has developed eCO-NET for the telecom industry.  This product combines network energy diagnostics tools with an end-to-end network energy operations management framework.  Wipro hopes eCO-NET will allow telecom businesses to manage their energy use more effectively.

As Wipro Chairman Azim Premji explains, Wipro sees smart grid and green IT technologies as "the next emerging opportunity.  We are positioning ourvselves very strongly."
