New GOP Congress to Launch “Investigations” into Climate Change Science

Less than 48 hours after winning a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, the new Republican (GOP) leaders have announced that as part of their new agenda, they will be holding extensive hearings and investigations into the “scientific fraud” behind global warming.

As reported by Sahil Kapur for Raw Story, this move is likely an attempt to appease the Republican base, who overwhelmingly consider climate change to be a hoax perpetrated by environmentalists. It would also serve as a symbolic gesture to America, to show them that the newly elected Republicans will follow through on their promises of investigations.

Unfortunately, rationale and science are not on their side. As a report from Skeptical Science shows, 97% of climate scientists are in complete agreement on the fact that, not only is climate change real and happening, but it is being exacerbated by the actions of man. They also are in agreement that if no action is taken, the problem will likely grow to a point where it can no longer be contained or reversed.

The Democrats, who will still hold both Houses of Congress until January 2011, tried and failed to pass comprehensive climate change legislation for more than a year, only to find little support for their initiative in the halls of Congress.

The new Republican majority that will take control in January, likely to be headed up by Congressman John Boehner, who himself has said that calling carbon dioxide dangerous is “comical,” are almost all in agreement that climate change science is a fraud. As reported in National Journal a few weeks ago, almost all Republican contenders in this year’s midterm election were climate change skeptics, leaving the prospects for any sort of climate legislation very grim while they are in control.
