Re:char [5] is the brainchild of Jason Aramburu, a recent Princeton University graduate and now self-styled biochar entrepreneur and researcher.
Formerly the chief technology developer and co-founder of Ecovolve Energy, a manufacturer of small-scale biomass pyrolysis systems, he launched re:char earlier this year with the mission of raising awareness of biochar and promoting the use of distributed energy, particularly in developing countries.
Biochar [6], which is produced by heating biomass in the absence of oxygen, has gained a lot of traction in recent months because of its carbon sequestration potential [7]. Aramburu and his team recently demonstrated a prototype mobile pyrolyzer [8] that is capable of processing around 800 kilograms of wood chips and sawdust a day into biochar and liquid fuel oil.

Jeremy is a doctoral student at the University of Southern California, where he studies marine environmental biology and public policy. His research interests include ocean acidification, trace metal chemistry and water quality.
