More Rooftop Solar System Installations at BJ’s Wholesale Club

Massachusetts-based BJ’s Wholesale Club (NYSE: BJ) is adding four more solar systems to its growing sustainable effort.
Two of the new rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are currently being installed in Massachusetts.
The Leominster location will receive a 308kW system and the South Attleboro store will receive a 344kW system. The installation is expected to be completed sometime this month.
Two new systems will also be installed in New Jersey sometime this summer. The big box wholesale outlets' total generating capacity is estimated at 2 megawatts once all the installations are completed.
According to a company press release, the new systems “will be installed and financed through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Tioga Energy.” BJ’s will pay for the electricity produced by the systems while Tioga will be responsible for the installation, monitoring and maintenance.
Massachusetts-based Spire Corporation (Nasdaq: SPIR) is providing the solar systems for the four solar projects. Spire was voted 2009’s Turnkey PV Manufacturing Line Company of the Year by Solar, a PV Management Magazine.
BJ’s Wholesale Club, in business since 1984, has over 180 stores in 15 states, according to the company website. Rooftop solar systems have been installed at 12 other BJ’s Wholesale Club in six states.
Committed to preserving the environment, BJ’s has numerous green initiatives in place. Energy consumption has been reduced by 100 million kWh.
In 2007, BJ’s recycled over 35,000 tons of cardboard in its company-wide recycling effort. The company’s conservation program promotes energy-efficiency strategies and provides incentives to change energy-wasting practices.
Use of electronic sensors and low-flow fixtures has reduced BJ’s water consumption. The use of energy-efficient LED lighting, dimmers and installation of skylights is also being expanded. An ENERGY STAR Partner since 1998, BJ's has received several awards for its energy efficiency efforts.
