With eyes set on a greener aviation industry, Airbus has launched its second global student contest called Fly Your Ideas (FYI) which includes a €30,000 top prize.
Launched this past week at the Farnborough International Airshow in the UK, FYI is a biennial competition open to any and all students around the world, regardless of discipline, nationality, age, or gender.
What is it?
The contest goes through three progressively challenging rounds, judged by industry experts, and concludes with a final at next summer’s International Paris Airshow in Le Bourget, France.
Each submission is to be viewed for its contribution to the ‘Environmental Life Cycle’ – an innovative approach Airbus uses to improve the environmental performance of an aircraft and its production process. Submissions must have ideas for five stages: design; supply chain; manufacturing; aircraft operations and aircraft end-of-life.
All of which falls under Airbus' appachro to eco-efficiency [pdf], a self-proclaimed commitment by the company to find ways to improve air travel while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Some of Airbus' Eco-Goals for 2020:
- 30% reduction in energy consumption
- 50% reduction in CO2 emissions
- 50% reduction in water consumption
- 80% reduction in water discharge
- 50% reduction in waste production
- Minimizing disturbance levels
- Respecting landscape & biodiversity
- Limiting the impact of oversize transport activities
The success of 2008's inaugural contest, where the University of Queensland's team CO2 won first place, prompted Airbus to continue the contest, seeking out innovative ideas from keen minds.
