October 16th is National Plug In Day, a nationwide observance that shines the spotlight on the many benefits of plug-in electric vehicles (EVs). While electric vehicles have become more affordable and mainstream, National Plug In Day provides the perfect opportunity for potential EV owners to learn more about plug-ins.
Touted as the largest grassroots electric vehicle event in history, 26 cities across America participated in the free event which was sponsored by Plug In America, the Electric Auto Association and the Sierra Club. Plug-in parades, tailpipe-free tailgate parties, lectures by notable speakers and demonstrations were held simultaneously around the nation. After a morning press conference, EV owners took a silent spin down Main Street during an EV parade in Santa Monica, the flagship event. And curious onlookers or perhaps potential owners were able to test drive plug-ins from various manufacturers including GM, Nissan, Tesla, SMART, Toyota, Ford, Coda and Mitsubishi.
Filmmaker Chris Paine spoke at the event. His 2006 documentary, “Who Killed the Electric Car,” is about electric cars, hybrids and the future of transportation. His latest film, “Revenge of the Electric Car”, hits theaters October 21, 2011. Folks in Denver were treated to a screening of the film as part of Denver's National Plug In Day.
