Award-Winning Chevrolet Volt Named 2011 Green Car of the Year
The Green Car Journal recently named its 2011 Green Car of the Year (GCOY) award to General Motors 2011 Chevrolet Volt. The announcement was made at the 2010 LA Auto Show late last week.
Touted as the “world’s first mass-produced electric vehicle with extended range capability,” Chevy’s Volt has a total driving distance of about 350 miles. For the first 25 to 50 miles, the Volt utilizes electricity stored in the 16-kWh lithium-ion battery. When the battery runs low, the gas-powered generator kicks in, providing an additional 300 miles to the extended-range electric vehicle (E-REV).
The Volt beat out finalists Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Ford Fiesta, and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, recipients of Green Car Journal’s Top 5 Green Cars for 2011. The aerodynamic Volt was the “first-ever electric vehicle to take the top prize.”
Along with Green Car editors, judges included Tonight Show host and car enthusiast Jay Leno, Sierra Club Chairman Carl Pope, Ocean Futures Society President and famed oceanographer Jean-Michel Cousteau, Natural Resources Defense Council President Frances Beinecke, Global Green USA President Matt Petersen and auto legend Carroll Shelby.
And this was not the only accolade given to the Volt. Last week, the 2011 Chevy Volt was also named Motor Trend’s 2011 Car of the Year and the AUTOMOBILE Magazine 2011 Automobile of the Year as well.
