BMW to Manufacture Electric Vehicles in Germany by 2013

Whether you support them or not, electric cars are taking the auto world by storm.  Manufacturers from around the globe are developing everything from electric sports cars to compact electric commuting cars.  It is unclear what models BMW will produce at the Leipzig factory.

However, it appears they might resemble the Active-E concept car the German company unveiled last month.  The Active-E is based off the BMW 1 Series.  Another vehicle that could roll off the Leipzig floor is the Megacity Vehicle, a subcompact city car, which many speculate will be designed in manner that resembles the Isetta model.

What is clear is BMW expects to be producing electric vehicles by 2013.  Norbert Teirhofer, Chairman of the BMW Group, sent a message to other automakers when he said, "The BMW Group will build the car of the future in Leipzig with high-tech innovations from Bavaria."
