The ChargePoint America Network EV Charging Station Comes to New York

Last week, New York City unveiled its first of 100 ChargePoint® Network EV Charging Stations as part of the federally funded ChargePoint America program.
Much like California's recent EV charging station splurge, New York City's response is also in anticipation of a coming flood of electric vehicles onto its city streets.
What's Happening:
The goal is to install hundreds of stations around the city, for both individual vehicle owners and fleets. Planning, installation, and maintenance will also create hundreds of new jobs, and set the groundwork for all necessary infrastructure relating to widespread electric vehicle usage.
"Installing these stations will impact the City in several ways," said Richard Lowenthal, CEO of Coulomb Technologies -- the creators of the ChargePoint® Network EV Stations.
"First, it will provide jobs to plan and install ChargePoint® charging stations around the city. Second, it will reduce carbon emission here, and third, it will give New Yorkers the opportunity to choose a vehicle that reduces our dependence on oil."
About the ChargePoint America Network:
The $37 million ChargePoint® America program is made possible by a $15M grant funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Coulomb’s ChargePoint® Network is open to all drivers of plug-in vehicles and provides authentication, management and real-time control for the networked electric vehicle charging stations.
Some of the network’s unique features include:
-
Charging status by SMS text or email notification
-
Location of unoccupied charging stations via smart phones
-
Authenticated access to eliminate energy theft
-
Authorized energizing for safety
-
Smart Grid integration for utility load management with future V2G capabilities
ChargePoint America will provide 4,600 public and home ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations by October 2011, adding to the existing ChargePoint Network. The remaining stations will be installed by September 2011.
