Ontario to Offer Incentives for Electric and Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles

Canadian governments have been at the heart of exciting electric vehicle news this week, the latest comes from Ontario.
The Ontario provincial government has announced it will offer a $4,000 CAD to $10,000 CAD subsidy to residents that purchase a plug-in hybrid vehicle or a battery electric vehicle. The subsidies will be instituted starting in July, 2010.
The province's electric vehicle scheme also mandates the development of electric charging infrastructure, and outfitting government agency vehicle fleets with electric of plug-in hybrid automobiles. Other incentives include giving electric vehicles a green license plate, and allowing electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles access to high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes at any time, even if there is only one person in the car.
Premier Dalton McGuinty says he would like to see electric vehicles account for one out of twenty new car purchases by 2020. The Premier also states this initiative will"get more people behind the wheel of a green vehicle, reduce smog and equip Ontario for the 21st century."
