DOE Gives $3 Million for Wind Power Training and Environmental Research

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will be investing nearly $3 million to advance the work of 16 institutions doing wind power research, including several colleges and universities.

While many awards in the past have gone to developing wind power technology, these funds will also be used to educate and develop training for the wind power workforce and to evaluate wind power’s environmental impact.

The funded projects include:

  • The University of Delaware will do research and development of corrosion protection, gearbox reliability, and tower structures in shallow offshore waters.
  • The University of Toledo will perform modeling and simulation of a two-bladed offshore turbine for use in the Great Lakes.
  • Eight universities will receive funds for wind power curriculum development.
  • Orion International will develop curricula for retraining military veterans as wind energy technicians.
  • National Aviary will study eastern golden eagle migration corridors and habitats in regions with high potential for wind power development.
  • Texas Tech University will study the response of grassland avian species to the construction of a wind farm in the Texas panhandle.
  • The University of Michigan will develop tools to inform decisions about the most suitable locations for land-based and offshore wind development in the Great Lakes region.
