London’s Strata SE1 Skyscraper Boasts Built-in Wind Power

London is adding another skyscraper to its skyline. While skyscrapers are nothing new, this particular building, nicknamed “The Razor” is quite unique. Reminiscent of an electric shaver, the modern and elegant Strata SE1 features three built-in wind turbines that are integrated into the building’s façade.

While other renewable energy technologies were considered for the project, wind turbines offered the best potential to achieve the greatest results.

The Strata SE1, located at Elephant and Castle, includes a 43-story Tower and a five-story Pavilion. The SE1 features three turbines that will take advantage of the 35mph wind speeds.

Each 19kW turbine is estimated to produce up to 50 mega watts per hour (MWh) of electricity annually. And the new London landmark is estimated to generate up to 8 percent of the SE1s energy needs. In order to reduce noise, each rooftop turbine has five blades instead of the traditional three. Four anti-vibration dampeners will help alleviate vibrations to the building.

Sustainability was an important aspect of the project. Besides the wind turbines, other sustainable features include whole house ventilation system with heat recovery, district heating system, low energy lighting, high performance glazing and 96 percent recycling of construction waste.

The Tower and the Pavilion buildings will feature panoramic views and house 408 high-quality apartments along with space for shops and restaurants.

Along with architect BFLS and the Southwark Council, the Strata SE1 was developed and built by Brookfield Europe.
In 2007, a vacant six-story office building was demolished at the Elephant and Castle location.  The project, which began in 2005, is estimated to be completed sometime in May, 2010.
