Shenyang Blower Works Signals its Entry into Wind Market with $70 Million Wind Turbine Control System Order

China's Shenyang Blower Works Co., Ltd. (SPW) has ordered US$70 million worth of wind turbine electrical control systems from American Superconductor Corporation (Nasdaq:AMSC).
The contol systems will be used in SPW's 2-megawatt doubly fed induction wind turbines. SBW's order represents the largest purchase agreement American Superconductor has received for its electrical control system. AMSC will begin shipping the control systems at the end of the year; shipments will continue until 2013, when the order will be complete.
AMSC's electrical control systems enable consistent and reliable high performance wind turbine operation by regulating voltage, controlling power flows, controlling the pitch and yaw of the turbine, and monitoring the entire system's performance.
Shenyang Blower Works is relatively new to wind market--the company plans to erect its first 2-megawatt turbine this March. However, Greg Yurek, CEO of American Superconductor, said this deal shows SBW is priming itself to make a significant splash in the wind market: "The magnitude of this electrical control system contract sends a strong signal that Shenyang Blower Works is positioned to be a key player in China's vibrant wind power market. The company sees long-term potential for this new line of business."
