Wind Power: Cell Phone Towers Powered by Wind

Helix Wind Corp. (OTC:HLXW) recently announced it will be testing two small vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWT) to power cell phone towers from Core Communications Group.

According to the company press release, the technology demonstration will also “explore the feasibility of selling power back to the electrical grid under a Power Purchase Agreement.”

The uniquely designed turbines will be installed in Southern California in early 2010 for a one to three month tower-testing trial period. With thousands of cell phone towers in the Southern California area, more turbines could be added on a permanent basis if the test is successful.  Helix Wind also plans on testing its turbines in West Africa as well. If successful, wind turbines will lower telecommunication companies operating expenses in developing nations and in remote locations.

Because of the towers unique design, less wind is needed to generate electricity. In fact, the towers are able to generate electricity in winds as low as 10 miles per hour. The sleek and silent towers are installed at lower heights, making them safer and lowering the costs.

According to the company, the turbines can pay for themselves in as little as six months, depending on the configuration. Due to their unique shape, the turbine is safe for birds and wildlife! Because the rotor spins more slowly than other turbines, birds and bats are able to see and avoid the solid object.
